The living room’s focal point is an unadorned marble-front fireplace framed by expansive picture windows. The well-balanced furniture grouping “echoes a 60s interpretation of entertaining,” says Polo, noting the classic configuration around the fireplace and requisite baby grand piano. Polo designed the room’s matching sofas upholstered in antique silk velvet and pair of ottomans in unshaved cowhide and sourced an exquisite, hammered-bronze cocktail table and silk and wool area rug in muted shades of cream and taupe. “This room is all about texture,” he says.

Buying a foreclosure, says firsttime home buyer Jena Edone, “can be a little scary when there’s no seller involved, and there’s no disclosure on what’s happened to the property. You’re going visually on what the place looks like till the inspection. But the flip side is, you can walk away with a really great deal.”

Small-town tranquility close to George Washington Bridge.
This quietly beautiful structure was imported from Java by the Englewood homeowners, longtime collectors of Asian art and artifacts. Indonesian families once lived in this antique teak building, whose open-air sleeping quarters at the bottom provide a respite from the island’s relentless heat. The upstairs, used as a kitchen by traditional inhabitants, now makes a great playhouse – or sometimes a place to read and reflect – for the acouple’s 12-year-old daughter. “I had designed a tree house that we were going to build around a tree, but when we found this, it had so much character,” notes the mother. “Originally, she complained, but now, she spends the afternoon there with her friends and a picnic basket, and it’s perfect.” The house and many other imports from the East are available from Massachusetts-based www.asiabarong.com.

These Bergen back yards feature fun and fantastical add-ons
Two distinct sitting areas and soaring picture windows give the home's great room a spacious, open-air feel. "Here, we aimed to create a space conducive to family gatherings, notes Syrek. The room is united by complementary shades of dark and pale gray, interspersed with cream. Hear the marble-front fireplace, Syrek chose an ultra-suede sofa by Lewis Mittman and cut-velvet chairs by Donghia, accented by a pair of leather stools by Hickory and a Lucite table by Lewis Mittman. A custom Orley & Shabahang carpet anchors the first sitting area. The homeowner also chose a striking Emil Alzamora sculpture of mother and child for the mantel. "This piece really resonated with her," recalls Syrek. "It was the final object chosen for the room." A custom chrome-plated fireplace screen by William H. Jackson gives the fireplace a crisp, clean finish. A more-modern second sitting area, framed by drapes in an Italian cotton by Nobilis, features a William Haines reproduction cocktail table and slipper chairs by Hamilton Furniture designer Catherine Stewart.

Chen completed the interior design of his home in 18 months and painstakingly selected each and every piece of furniture, light fixture and artwork. The living room, with its large-scale sofas and chairs upholstered in Chen’s color palate of soft grays, browns and whites and the room’s rug that resembles river rocks, is the homeowner’s favorite space in the house. “I wanted this room to have a “wow” factor even if it was just for me,” says Chen. “I had a master remote system installed so that with one flick I can have music and TV on, in surround sound. On a cold day, I will put on the gas fireplace. I love this room.”
