CC Sabathia has been the ace of the Yankees’ pitching staff since 2009, when he signed a seven-year contract as a free agent. In his first season in the Bronx, the lefthander won 19 games and led the Bombers to their first world championship since 2000. He was also voted the Most Valuable Player in the AL Championship Series.
Sabathia, 31, was born in Vallejo, California and attended Vallejo High School where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. As a multi-sport star, Sabathia received scholarship offers to play college football from UCLA and actually signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Hawaii.
Baseball eventually won out, however, as Sabathia was picked by the Indians in the first round of the 1998 Major League draft. He quickly rose through Cleveland’s farm system and by 2001 was pitching for the big league team. At age 20 on Opening Day, CC was the game’s youngest player that year.
He has since been named to the All-Star team five times and in 2007 was voted the winner of the prestigious Cy Young Award.
As a Yankee, Sabathia has become a year-round Bergen resident, living in Alpine with his wife, Amber, and their fourth children. CC is the Executive Director of the PitCCh In Foundation which helps kids and young adults make positive choices in their lives.
