The earliest settlers of the Demarest area were the Westervelts, who first arrived in 1723, while David Demarest, the first Demarest family member to come to the U.S., had arrived in Bergen County in 1677. The Borough of Demarest was formed by parts of both Harrington and Palisade townships on April 3, 1903. Residents of Demarest enjoy quiet tree-lined streets, acres of open recreation and forested lands, and the scenic pond.
