the bergen.com bio
Known as the county seat of Bergen, the City of Hackensack received its current name from "Sagamore of Hacquinsacq," Lenni Lenape Chief Oratam, who leased the land to Dutch settlers in 1664. The city served as an important locale during the Revolutionary War, where George Washington stationed his troops in November 1776 and ultimately decided to continue their retreat from the British and Hessian soldiers. Today, Hackensack is a melting pot of various cultures, bustling streets and scenic parks.
