Before Ridgefield became known as a commuter town with easy access to the New Jersey Turnpike and Route 46, it was a quiet artists' colony established in 1913 by Man Ray, Alfred Kraymborg and Samuel Halpert. To this day, certain names of streets - Sketch Place, Studio Road and Art Lane - exist to pay homage to the colony's history.
