Acclaimed as the greatest innovator of bass guitar, Jaco Pastorius of Weather Report brought a unique sound to the masses before his untimely death. Fans around the world meet up and pay tribute to the musician every December around his birth date. For two years now, local bass buffs meet at Gainville Café in Rutherford for a Jaco tribute.

This year, Pastorius's legacy was celebrated at the Red Wheelbarrow Poets event on Friday, Dec. 7.

Although Pastorius was a jazz musician, his influence stretches across genres. Michael Lisa, a Rutherford resident and notable bass player on the rock and heavy metal local scene, said Jaco's impact was profound.
