With their flavor, texture, nutritional value and culinary versatility, avocados are one of nature's busiest (and healthiest) foods. Brimming with good-for-you monounsaturated fat, avocado on a sandwich or in a salad can up the amount of heart-healthy fats in your diet.

According to studies, avocado can help lower LDL levels while raising the amount of HDL cholesterol in your body. It allows for the absorption of other carotenoids, especially beta-carotene and lycopene, which are essential for heart health.

The most popular variety, the Hass avocado, has a thick pebbly skin and buttery flesh and accounts for about 90 percent of all avocados sold in the United States. You might see other types with a thin, smooth, green skin, but they have a firmer, less creamy flesh. Those avocados are best suited to slicing for salads or sandwiches rather than making guacamole.

Sept. 16 is National Guacamole Day – the perfect time to enjoy some avocados!
