There is nothing quite like a root beer float. A frosty glass. Smooth vanilla ice cream. Bubbling root beer. Frothy foam and whipped cream. A root beer float is an all-American classic. This combination of ingredients creates a perfectly refreshing yet decadent treat.

According to history, Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Hires is most often credited with inventing the drink we know today, brewed from a combination of more than 25 herbs, berries and root, which he used to flavor a carbonated soda water. His version of a root beer beverage was first introduced to the public in 1876. The Hires family continued to manufacture root beer and, in 1893, first sold and distributed bottled root beer.

Another famous brand of root beer is A&W Root Beer, which was founded by Roy Allen, who began marketing his root beer in 1919. It became so successful Allen took on a partner, Frank Wright. They introduced their A&W brand in 1922 and soon thereafter opened the first drive-in to sell it.

Today, there are a variety of root beers available, but one thing is for sure: This classic drink will bring back your fondest childhood memories.
