In Good Spirits: Polar Parade
By Bob Probert

Last year around this time, Rob Lipkin, director of operations and beverage manager at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn, was kind enough to share with (201) readers his good counsel on the topic of warm winter cocktails. Hot Toddy, Hot Buttered Rum and Hot Peppermint Patty were tested and photographed, and the recipes provided.
The simple truth, though, is that a fine and satisfying winter cocktail, one appropriate for taking off the chill, or simply hunkering down, needn't be warm. Once again we asked for Lipkin's help. Here are a few winter drink recipes for you to try out.

Stay warm.

Snowball
This one adds citrus edges to the gentle kick of vodka, smoothed by the addition of advocaat a rich and creamy liqueur made from egg yolks, sugar, and brandy.

* For film buffs, advocaat is what Delbert Grady spills on Jack Torrance, Jack Nicholson's character in The Shining

Ingredients
    1     ounce vodka
    1     ounce Irish Cream
1     ounce Godiva, white or dark chocolate liqueur
    1     splash cream
Preparation
Frost martini glass with sugar, add ingredients and mix.

Frostini
Decadent and sweet but with a little kick, the Frostini makes a good after-dinner dessert cocktail.

Ingredients
    1     ounce pomegranate liqueur
    2     ounces vodka
    1    ounce pink grapefruit
Preparation
Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into the champagne glass.

Winter Blush
Worth preparing, if only for the antioxidants and vitamin C, the pomegranate and citrus will soothe and protect while the vodka warms.

Ingredients
    1     ounce gin
    1     ounce maraschino liqueur
        Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1     egg white
Preparation
Vigorously shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into a frozen cocktail glass.

Polar Cocktail
The lemon juice balances the sweetness of the liqueur in this unique cocktail, and the flavors complement the gin nicely.

Ingredients
    1-1/2     ounces whiskey
    1-1/2     ounces sherry
    1-1/2     ounces port
    1     teaspoon sugar
        Preferred fruit for garnish
Preparation
Stir all ingredients in a wine goblet filled with ice. Garnish with fruits of choice in the drink and on the rim.

Whispers of the Frost
This one comes from The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book, which features drink recipes from before Prohibition. Made with whiskey, sherry and port, it will definitely help brace against winter's chill.

Ingredients
    1     ounce Citron vodka
    1     ounce advocaat*
        Lemonade
    1/2     ounce lime juice
Preparation
Shake together the vodka, advocaat and lime juice and pour into ice-filled glass. Top with lemonade and stir.
