Three fortified wines from Portugal (and one from Australia).

Port is a sweet, fortified wine made in the Douro region of Portugal. Production begins the same way as any wine: with the picking, crushing and fermentation of the grapes.

Fortification takes place by adding a neutral spirit (often called a "wine brandy") to the wine during fermentation. This step will not only lift the alcohol content, but also stop the fermentation before all of the grapes' natural sugars have converted to alcohol. The fortified, still naturally sweet juice is then sent to the barrel or tank for aging, and it's here the Port's style will be determined.

Port style wines are made elsewhere in the world, but to be considered a Port, the wine must come from Portugal. All of the following are widely available.
