Summer brings a craving for a refreshing drink. To some, that translates into a desire for a crisp, clear gin and tonic at the end of a long, hot day. There is no denying this is the season for gin.
"It screams summer," Al Pascale, bartender at Martini Grill in Wood-Ridge, says of gin. "It's made from botanicals."
Gin is derived from juniper berries and other herbs and spices like coriander and angelica. Different varieties add different ingredients. Bombay Sapphire, for instance, is "vapour infused with 10 exotic botanicals." New Amsterdam offers a more citrusy flavor.
These days, gin is enjoying a bit of a resurgence, with new varieties available and a new generation giving it a chance.
"It is being ordered more than it used to be," Pascale says.
If a gin and tonic is not your style, don't just move on to something else. Gin can still create the perfect evening cocktail, fruity and refreshing and just right for a summer night.
So get out your shaker and some fruits of the season. Pascale used four different gins and shook up four summer gin cocktails to quench the thirst and satisfy that craving.
