After the unspeakable tragedy of the Newtown/Sandy Hook Elementary School, Jennifer Ashton and Staci Blank wanted to do something to express their sympathy to, and encourage healing for the people of Newtown. They decided that they would start a ʻTree Drive': a memorial fund which will go towards the purchase, planting, and maintenance of 26 beautiful 10-foot tall trees (of the town's choice) which they will deliver and plant in April.
Their hope was that these trees would serve as a beautiful symbol of life and a memorial tribute to the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School. When they told Jeff, the owner of Victoria's Nursery in Paramus, their plan, he immediately volunteered to transport and plant these trees for free and also to donate many of the trees to Newtown.
Trees have traditionally been planted in many cultures in honor of an accomplishment or an important rite of passage such as a graduation, wedding, retirement or the birth of a child. This tradition is also appropriate for honoring the life of a loved one at the loved one's passing.
If you would like to participate in the Memorial Tree Drive, you can do so in several ways: a monetary donation for the purchase, transportation, planting and maintenance of these trees with an undated check made out to Victoria's Nursery in an amount of your choice. You will be notified when the check is cashed in the spring. School students may donate cash if it is easier. All names will be included in a special note to Newtown. In addition to donating, you can participate in the actual planting of these trees in Newtown in April, 2013. They have been in touch with the Town/Parks and DPW regarding these logistics. Please provide your e-mail address so they can keep you updated.
