Tips To Stay Calm: Little things you can do to lift spirits, stay positive
By Kara Yorio of The Record

The quest for a happier year continues. And a monumental effort or grand act isn't necessary.

Ridgewood psychologist Ken Langlieb, along with the co-director of Yoga Synthesis in Ramsey, Rose Fitzgerald, and holistic life coach Janette LaVigne, who consults with people in North Jersey and surrounding areas, helped us compile a list of little things to do to lift spirits.

Here's another week's worth of tips. (Look for the final installment of our three-part feature next Tuesday.):

* Do something nice for yourself.

* Repeat a positive one-word mantra to yourself ("peace" "courage" "joy"), can be done in the car, on a walk, wherever.

* Make a plan, take action, don't wait for someone else to call, and give yourself something to look forward to.

* Be extra nice to the person you have conflict with at work.

* Do a good deed, big or small, for someone else. (It is of value only if you feel good about doing it.)

* When your mind is getting negative, stop and focus on your breathing, taking deep breaths into your belly.

* Incorporate meditation, journaling, prayer, even taking in nature — whatever works.
