The biggest Indian festival, Diwali, the festival of lights, was celebrated at the Sethi household in Upper Saddle River. Festivities included fireworks, sparklers, dancing and tremendous Indian decorations of clay lamps, Ganesha statues, candles, rangolis (colorful decorations on the floors), as well as card games and plenty of food and drink.

The festival of lights commemorates the legend of the homecoming of Lord Rama on a moonless night, after 14 years in exile. It is also the beginning of the Hindu new year, when the goddess Laxmi is welcomed into all homes by decorating homes and keeping them clean and well lit. In short, Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil.
