According to its website, The Art of Cake is "a unique custom wedding cake and specialty boutique." That's a mouthful, but it's somehow appropriate, since The Art of Cake is all about filling mouths. "That's true," owner and designer Tammy Dunwoody says. "What I do and what The Art of Cake is really about is taking a cake and making it into a piece of art."
Dunwoody has transformed her art into a thriving business that offers not only fondant and buttercream wedding and special occasion cakes, but also cupcakes, cookies, preserves, decorating gift baskets and more. Along the way, she has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show and Cupcake Wars, opportunities that have enhanced her reputation and increased The Art of Cake's public profile.
"It's a great feeling, a wonderful feeling to know I'm making my own business work. I opened The Art of Cake two years ago. I walk into my bakery and I'm just thrilled, because I'm a very hands-on person and, though other people help me a little bit, really everything that goes out of there I created.
"I live in Oradell with my two kids, Paige, 17, and Justin, 14. I grew up in Alexandria, Va., and spent most of my summers up in New Brunswick, Canada, with my grandparents, but have lived in Oradell for 22 years.
"I love Oradell and Bergen County, but I don't get to go out too much because I'm so busy with work. We go over to Cousins in Closter, because that's a family place. Justin can have chicken fingers and french fries, and I can have great pasta.
"We'll go to Garden State Plaza for a movie. The kids like to go to Bergen Town Center because there's a Cups Frozen Yogurt there that they love. And I'll go to Restaurant Felice here in town if I want a nice dinner. But I'm not kidding when I say I don't get out a lot."
