A group of local women had lunch with Miss Israel 2013, Yityish Aynaw (Titi to her friends), this past Friday to hear her remarkable story as part of a fundraising visit in the North Jersey Metro area.
The 21-year-old grabbed international attention after becoming the first woman of African descent to be crowned Miss Israel at the country's beauty pageant. Aynaw was born in a small village in northern Ethiopia called Chahawit. Her father died when she was young and when she was 12 years old she lost her mother to a painful illness. Aynaw went from a little girl playing barefoot in an Ethiopian village to an Israeli beauty queen ready to shine on the world stage.
