Because of the movie "The Breakfast Club," the band Simple Minds' plea of "don't you forget about me" may forever be associated with high school and the quest for identity and acknowledgement. But in high school off screen, it can be hard for students to fulfill that quest when they spend their years trying to stay afloat of school work and get into college.
Ridgewood High School (RHS) English teacher Kristen Caldwell is attempting to remedy that with a new spring elective starting Feb. 4 in which her students will write parts of their own memoirs.
According to Caldwell, "Non-Fiction Creative Writing" will take the traditional RHS English course, which emphasizes the writings of others, and turn it around.
Instead of students' analyzing others' writing, their own lives will take center stage.
"Basically, they are the critical characters," she said.
