Quiz Cam, Jan. 16, 2012: Putting a call out to Englewood
By

Episode 31: This week, quizmaster Ryan Greene goes calling on Englewood merchants and passersby, inquiring about a historic event from Englewood's past.

THE QUESTION: In 1951, Englewood Mayor M. Leslie Downing participated in the first official coast-to-coast act of its kind, and without ever leaving his desk. What was it?

THE ANSWER: (scroll down)

THE ANSWER:  Downing made the first customer-dialed coast-to-coast 10-digit direct-dial telephone call. The newly introduced area code system made such phone calls possible without the assistance of telephone operators. (201) was the first area code in the nation to prompt the phone call, with Mayor Frank Osborne of Alameda, Calif. (in area code 415), on the receiving end. The connection took about 18 seconds to complete.
