The newly introduced area code system made such phone calls possible without the assistance of telephone operators. (201) was the first area code in the nation to prompt the phone call, with Mayor Frank Osborne of Alameda, Calif. (in area code 415), on the receiving end. The connection took about 18 seconds to complete.
