Waldwick has always been associated with transportation, and many who work in New York City have found it a particularly family-friendly spot from which to commute. It's served by two train lines (the Bergen County and the Main) and is bisected by Franklin Turnpike and Route 17, major arteries for traversing the northwest suburbs. Housing is mostly single-family, and the population includes a mix of families, seniors and singles.

POPULAR EATERIES

Cinco de Mayo: Fresh, authentic Mexican fare served in a colorful, convivial atmosphere.

Matthews Colonial Diner: Regulars from the neighborhood and surrounding towns flock to the much-heralded Matthews for classic diner food and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Nellie's Place: A neighborhood favorite whose claim to fame is the thin-crust pizza.

The Village Grille: A cozy bistro that specializes in seafood. The Village Grille was voted Best Dessert Menu and Best Neighborhood Bar in (201)'s 2012 Best of Bergen Poll. It was also a runner-up in the Best Brunch category.

CHILD'S PLAY

Waldwick is home to one of New Jersey's best sports facilities. Superdome Sports features a state-of-the art 79,000 square feet of pure pleasure. Under its 67-foot-high ceiling, the climate-controlled dome offers four playing fields and a three-lane running track. In The Swing offers a video arcade, play area, batting cages, snack bar and Frozen Ropes, a baseball and softball academy with various level classes.

The borough has four parks, all with playgrounds and activities for a variety of interests. The largest, Borough Park, sits along the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook and White's Pond. In addition to fishing, it has fitness trails, bicycle paths and picnic grounds. In the summer, the community pool is a popular place for cooling off.

The borough also has basketball courts, tennis courts and athletic fields. In addition to the public facilities, there are several private clubs close by, including the Anona Park Swim Club, The Apple Ridge Country Club and the Saddle River Valley Swim & Tennis Club.

SHOPPING

Most of the borough's retail shops and services can be found along Franklin Turnpike in various shopping centers. Gourmet delis, gift shops, nail salons and sports centers blend with dry cleaners, fast food restaurants and chain coffee shops.
